What does a Geek scream while on a rollar coaster?

June 30th, 2008 | Category: activities

What a day!

First up, went to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom with Fuzzy. Was supposed to go with two others, but they couldn’t make it minutes before we left San Jose, so it was just the two of us. Been a few years since I’ve been to Six Flags and the rides haven’t changed much and neither has the thrills!
My fav roller coasters in order were:
1) Medusa (pictured below): 150ft tall and reaches speeds of 65mph. When the ride opened in 2000, it featured the tallest vertical loop in the world at 128ft tall. Medusa is the longest roller coaster in Northern California and shares the height record with V2: Vertical Velocity, also located at the park. Check out the video here -> Medusa Video

2) Vertical Velocity: 150ft tall and reaches speeds of up to 70mph. I’ll be honest..the last time I came to this park in 2001 or so I didn’t wanna get on this roller coaster (ended up going coz my sis needed a buddy)…the drop looks crazy. Turns out that the last time I was on it the ride was 186 ft high, but had to be lowered in 2002 to meet city limits (cities have limits on how high roller coasters can be? Who knew?)
Video Here -> Vertical Velocity Video

3) Kong: Starts with a 115 foot lift hill. Followed by that is a 105 foot drop, a heartline loop, sidewinder, and back to back inline twists.

Other rides were on the same level. Also watched some whales and dolphin shows.

OH and to answer the question: What does a Geek scream while on a rollar coaster?

We much to Fuzzy’s annoyance…I was screaming “V=IR” (Voltage = current x resistance) on Medusa and Kong.

Secondly came home to find that my domain was working!! So transfered everything over to this new hosting account and ta-dah…we’re live!

Bye bye to bad rubbish (aka Godaddy)

June 28th, 2008 | Category: web

Update: Blog has moved. If you’re reading this that then means you’re on my new domain.

Even though this blog has been up for a extremely short time, I found out yesterday that I will not be able to grow it in the directionn I want to because of the limitations placed by my hosting company (GoDaddy). Even though their hosting plan prices are in line with competitors they lack a lot of services that others offer. Their lousy customer service responds to every question with “No..that feature isn’t available..but if you upgrade..blah blah blah” basically asking me to upgrade to a plan that costs 6x what my monthly cost of running this website is. Again these features are offered for much cheaper by other companies.

Theres only one way to deal with such companies…you drop em like a dead fish. Found my new host last night (Hostgator.com) and will be moving this site over to that account..and a new domain name soon. The new domain will be Geekdreams.net. At the time of this post, that name is not activate yet, but it should be within 24-48 hours. I’ll leave a message here once that is done..and I will slowly (in a week or so) switch the sh1va.net domain to my new hosting account as well and both will point to the new blog.

Who knows..maybe my current hosting provider will read this post against em and suspend my account..well I don’t care…

Sweet Strawberry Swings Batman!

June 27th, 2008 | Category: coldplay, music, tv

I haven’t had a chance to watch the Today Show yet (tivoed it this morning), but it looks like the coldplaying.com members who won VIP passes to the show had amazing seatings! Still waiting to see the pics taken by C, but I found some pics taken by another member and WOW….so close up!

Theres videos of the show on the msnbc site for everyone outside the US who wasn’t able to watch it on tv or anyone who couldn’t tivo it. Heres a link to it -> CLICK HERE

Some highlights of the show according to a member of the cping forums -

  • When the announcer lady called referred to Jonny as Guy. (Poor Jon, he didn’t know what to do )
  • When the announcer ladies (with embarrassed faces) held up 2 freakin’ bras that the crowd had thrown at the stage!!!
  • And then in the middle of Lost! Chris got thrown a pair of black panties and exclaimed “Wow people are getting undressed here man!” Gross!!
  • When Al Roker said “Coldplay rules!!!”
  • When Al Roker was talking to some fans standing behind the stage and he told them “Oh you get a great view of the drummer’s toosh!”

Coldplay on the Today Show!

June 26th, 2008 | Category: coldplay, movie, music, tivo, tv

Coldplay will be on the Today Show tomorrow morning! A friend, C , won VIP tickets to watch them perform some songs from up close! How awesome is that? Can’t wait to hear all the details and see the pics =0) (C if you’re reading this I hope you remember to take your camera!)

Wondering what the setlist will be. I’m guessing that they will definitely play Violet Hill and Viva la vida. Lovers in Japan maybe…Chris seems to like that track..and thats no surprise..its one of my favs. Hope they do strawberry swings..would love to catch that on my tivo.

Speaking about setlists..the following pic was taken (in the former bakery that they used to record, rehearse and chill) about a month or so before the album was released..

So far they have sung all those songs live this month (during the 3 free shows, the secret gig in holland and on tv) except Yes, Sparks, Shiver, Don’t Panic. Could this be the setlist for the full blown tour once it starts in the middle of next month? Guess only time will tell.

Let’s see what else is on my mind…Wanted (with Angelia Jolie!! Wooohoo) is coming out tomorrow..hope I get to see it this weekend. Also waiting for Wall-e…trailers look cool…the geek in me can’t wait to see the robot romance between Wall-e and Eve =0)

Greatest band on earth!!!

June 26th, 2008 | Category: apple, coldplay, iphone

Took an extended break from this blog…but now I’m back =0)..and what better way to start things up then an announcement that Coldplay will be back in the Bay Area on the 18th of July…and I’ll be there in the 8th row screaming my lungs out rocking to the greatest band on the planet =0)

A lil disappointed that I wasn’t able to get decent seats during the pre-sale or the general sale..and had to resort to EVIL EVIL ticketmaster’s auction to get decent seats. Don’t ask me how much these decent seats cost =0(…but I know it will be worth every minute of the concert!

Good week for coldplay fans..Viva la vida or Death and all his friends (VLVODAAHF) is on top of the album charts in both the US and the UK…selling over 730,000 units in the US…and the single Viva la vida is also number one in both the US and the UK. In 2005 those wacky brits denied coldplay a #1 hit by making that crazy frog song number one (and they say that american’s have bad taste in music? HAH!) but they hit #1 this time around. What’s pretty cool is that the single has only been available as a download this time around (its not even a official single yet…violet hill was the first single from this album)..it was supposed to be a teaser for the album…and being so was not eligible for the charts..but once the album came out, so many ppl bought that track individually that it sent it soaring to #1.

Besides listening to VLVODAAHF I also checked out the new Janet Jackson album…23 tracks and only 2 good ones! The new Alanis Morissette album is pretty good…and its hard to say that openly as a guy as you supposedly have to be a disgruntled female teen to appreciate her music (hey she DID lighten up with her last album…think its coz she got married or something).

3G iPhone comes out on july 11th…a google news search will bring up tens of a) articles on why the iPhone sucks or b) how much of a profit apple will make off the device.

Addressing (b) first -> The $170 Bill of materials floating around does not include the R&D cost and since the iphone is one if not the most innovative phone out there on the market expect this R&D cost to be a huge! Secondly no one sells products for the hell of it..or to make the world a better place…its to make $$$ and I hope Apple makes a lot of money off the iPhone so that they say around for decades and continue to innovate.
Addressing (a) -> Get over it. Your blackberry is yesterday’s news. Is the iPhone perfect? No, but its a hell lot better then any blackberry or palm smartphone for non business use. Alot of holes in the iPhone will be filled up now that third-party developers can make apps for it. One of best feature of the iPhone is that ANYONE can pick it up and become a power user in a day if not in minutes. Try that with your blackberry.

Catch me in line to get a 3G iphone on the 11th of next month!
